Setting The Agenda: Safety First

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to the Beauty Standard with Dr. Roy Kim. Welcome back to the Beauty Standard. I am your host, Dr. Roy Kim. Today we're pulling back the curtain on the aesthetic industry from the cultural obsession with perfection to the high-stakes business moves happening behind your doctor's office door. We have a lot to cover, including some recent news from Women's Health, Men's Health, Allure, US Weekly, People, New Beauty, the CDC, and of course Medscape.

Botox “Resistance” Explained

SPEAKER_00

Let's start with a major concern I hear in my office every week: Botox resistance. According to a Deep Dive in Women's Health, many patients worry they've become immune to their injections. While biological immunity, where your body forms neutralizing antibodies, is possible, really experts know it's extremely rare. It really only affects about 1.8% of participants in a large-scale review. Often, what feels like resistance is probably related to technique or dosage, such as overdilution by inexperienced providers trying to offer a deal.

Med Spa Growth And Regulation Gaps

SPEAKER_00

This lack of standardization in med spas is a hallmark of what Allure calls med spa nation. With nearly 10,500 med spas in the US, the industry is growing by $2 billion annually, yet it operates under a patchwork quilt of state laws.

DIY Toxins And CDC Warnings

SPEAKER_00

The risks are real. One study found that non-surgical fat reduction had an 80% complication rate at med spas compared to just 36% in physician offices. The danger levels really peak when patients bypass professionals entirely. A chilling report from the CDC details three women in 2025 who suffered severe botulism-like symptoms after self-injecting toxin after self-injecting toxin purchased online from vendors in Asia. One patient even required invasive mechanical ventilation, so please never treat medical-grade neurotoxins as a DIY

Cultural Shifts: Regret And Status

project. Changing gears to the why behind these procedures, U.S. Weekly magazine recently covered Kylie Jenner opening up about her surgical regrets. Now she's pretty young, but at the age of 28, she shared that she wished she had never touched her breast at 19 and has even begun dissolving her lip fillers after years of exhausting online scrutiny. This cultural shift is something that creator Ryan Murphy discussed in People magazine, noting that while surgery was taboo when he made Nip and Tuck in 2003, it's now a status symbol that many people flaunt. He's even exploring this obsession in his new horror series, The Beauty. But what happens after the big transformation?

Weight Loss, Loose Skin, And Timing

SPEAKER_00

A powerful feature in Men's Health magazine follows actor Ethan Suppley's journey, losing 250 pounds, and he has to face the silent challenge of loose skin. Supply reminds us that skin is an organ that doesn't just diet away. It often requires complex surgical removal. With the rise of GLP1 medications like Ozempic, these skin removal surgeries have increased by about 23%. Supply's own 2008 recovery was a nightmare involving six blood transfusions because he wasn't physically or mentally prepared. So this is a vital lesson in timing your surgery correctly.

Who Owns Your Clinic: PE Takeover

SPEAKER_00

While you're focusing on your results, you also need to know who owns the facility you're in. A revealing report from Medscape discusses the quiet takeover of surgical centers by private equity or PE firms. These firms have invested over a trillion dollars in U.S. healthcare, often taking total financial and clinical control. While they promise efficiency, critics argue the focus on short-term profit can lead to physician turnover and patient costs that are 50% higher

Everyday Skincare: AHA/BHA Advice

SPEAKER_00

on average. Finally, for your daily glow, New Beauty magazine consulted board certified plastic surgeons on chemical exfoliants. They recommend AHA and BHA to dissolve dead skins, specifically highlighting products like the Skin Medica AHA BHA, specifically highlighting products like the Skin Medica AHA, BHA exfoliating cleanser for post-facial glow. Just remember, if you see redness or irritation, your skin is telling you to hit the pause button.

Final Safety Metaphor And Closing

SPEAKER_00

And that's the beauty standard for today. Stay informed, stay safe, and remember, your health is your most valuable asset. I always think about patient safety. And you need to think about your body like a historic landmark building. You can update the facade, you can polish the floors, but you must ensure the architect and the engineers that you hire that they understand the original structure and they're not cutting costs on the foundation. If you try to patch together the electrical, the plumbing yourself, or if you hire the cheapest contractor available, you risk the integrity of the entire home. Invest in a master craftsman because your building was meant to last a lifetime. I'm Dr. Roy Kim, and thanks so much for joining me on the Beauty Standard.
