The Beauty Standard with Dr. Roy Kim

Your jawline can be defined again with these double chin treatments.

Dr. Roy Kim

Dr. Roy Kim breaks down the most effective options for eliminating double chins and explains why certain treatments work better for different anatomical situations. This comprehensive guide helps you understand which procedure—Kybella, CoolSculpting, liposuction, or a neck lift—will give you the best results without wasting your time or money.

• Double chins can be caused by superficial fat or deeper fat under the platysma muscle
• Neck lifts are necessary when fat is under the platysma muscle or when skin is loose
• Kybella works well for small, well-defined fat deposits but causes swelling and can get expensive
• CoolSculpting freezes fat cells but may produce uneven results and carries risk of paradoxical fat growth
• Liposuction remains the gold standard for double chin treatment with faster results and less swelling
• Treatment choice depends on your specific anatomy and the amount of fat present

Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Beauty Standard with Dr Roy Kim. Hi everyone, welcome to the Beauty Standard. Dr Roy Kim here, and if you're bothered by your double chin, you're not alone. A lot of people struggle with this, but the good news is that there are several options out there to help you get rid of it for good. Today, I'm going to walk you through your major options Kybella, coolsculpting, liposuction and more to help you decide what's best for you. Let's break it down so you don't waste your time or money.

Speaker 1:

Let's dive in First things first. Let's understand what a double chin actually is. Most of the time, it's just fat right underneath the skin, but in some cases the fat can be deeper, underneath a muscle called the platysma muscle. If the fat is underneath the platysma, or if you've got loose skin in the area, no injectable or non-invasive treatment is going to do the trick. In these cases, you probably need a neck lift, which is a surgical procedure to tighten up both skin and muscle. But for those of you who have more superficial fat or skin that's still relatively firm, there are some other treatments to consider.

Speaker 1:

Let's get into the options. Let's start with Kybella, which is an injectable treatment designed to melt fat underneath the chin. What's great about Kybella is that it works well for small, well-defined fat deposits. It's a series of injections mixed with numbing medicine, and the fat is broken down by the active ingredient in Kybella, which is a synthetic version of a bile acid that naturally breaks down fat. However, while Kybella can work wonders on smaller areas of fat, it's not great for larger pockets of fat. Also, it's worth mentioning that swelling is pretty common after treatment, and if you need more than three vials of Kybella, it can start to get pretty expensive, which is something to keep in mind.

Speaker 1:

Next, we've got CoolSculpting. This one freezes fat. Now, the concept behind CoolSculpting is that it uses cold to destroy fat cells. I apply a cold pad to the area underneath your chin and that extreme cold freezes and damages the fat cells. Over time, those cells are naturally eliminated by the body. While it's a painless treatment, the challenge is that the cooling pads don't always match the anatomy of your specific double chin. This can sometimes lead to uneven results. Plus, there's a rare risk that fat could actually grow in the treated area instead of shrinking, which is definitely something to consider.

Speaker 1:

Now let's talk about the gold standard in double chin treatment liposuction. Liposuction is still the most effective way to remove fat from underneath the chin. In my practice, I use local anesthesia, make a tiny incision, inject numbing medicine and then I use a cannula to remove the fat. Not only can I target the fat under the chin, but I can also sculpt the jawline for a more defined look. Liposuction is fast and in most cases it involves less swelling than Cabela, which is an injectable. You'll see results much quicker and it's a great option if you've got a bit more fat to remove. Plus, the recovery time is relatively short.

Speaker 1:

So here's the breakdown. If you've got small fat deposits and relatively tight skin, cabela is a good option for you. If you've got more fat but the skin is still in good shape, liposuction is likely your best bet. If you have loose skin, skin bands or fat underneath the platysma muscle, a neck lift will probably be necessary to address those concerns. As for CoolSculpting, while it's a decent option for some, I don't consider it my top pick for treating the double chin. It works for some, but it doesn't offer the same level of precision or results as the other methods. In the end, double chin treatments aren't a one-size-fits-all approach, but with the right plan and guidance from a board-certified plastic surgeon, you can absolutely get rid of that stubborn fat and restore a more youthful, defined jawline.
