Welcome to the Beauty Standard with Dr Roy Kim. Okay, so have you heard about preventative Botox?
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1It's like everywhere these days, right.
Speaker 2It is.
Speaker 1All over social media magazines. Maybe even you know conversations with friends. So we're going to take a deep dive into whether it's really all it's cracked up to be, and if it's even something worth considering. Right it's really all it's cracked up to be, and if it's even something worth considering Right. Our guide for this deep dive is a recent Newsweek article that explores both sides of this increasingly popular treatment.
Speaker 2Okay, cool, yeah. What's really fascinating about preventative Botox is that we're not just talking about addressing wrinkles that you already have.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2We're talking about kind of preemptively stopping them.
Speaker 1Yeah, it really is a whole new way of thinking about beauty and aging.
Speaker 2It is.
Speaker 1But before we get ahead of ourselves, let's break down exactly what preventative Botox is and how it actually works.
Speaker 2Okay, so preventative Botox isn't about erasing existing wrinkles like traditional Botox Right, it targets specific muscles that are prone to repetitive movements.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2Like when you frown or raise your eyebrows. Oh, I see, by injecting Bocox into those muscles, you're essentially reducing their activity.
Speaker 1So it's not about like freezing your face or anything.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1It's more about subtly relaxing certain muscles to prevent those dynamic wrinkles from becoming like etched into your face over time.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's a good way to put it.
Speaker 1And, by the way, when I say dynamic wrinkles, I mean like the ones that show up when you make expressions.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1But over time those can turn into those like more permanent static wrinkles.
Speaker 2Exactly Okay, and to understand this better, it helps to grasp the difference between those two types of wrinkles. Got it? You know, the Newsweek article uses a great analogy. Oh really, Imagine folding a piece of paper repeatedly.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Eventually that crease becomes permanent.
Speaker 1Oh.
Speaker 2Dynamic wrinkles are like the initial folds. I see Temporary and fleeting.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2But with time and repetition they can turn into those stubborn permanent creases we call static wrinkles.
Speaker 1Oh, okay, that's a great way to visualize it.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1But you know something that I found interesting in this article it mentioned that Gen Z is actually getting on board with this trend. Oh, wow, yeah. So is it really necessary to start worrying about wrinkles in your early 20s? Yeah, it seems a bit early, doesn't it?
Speaker 2It's a fair question and it taps into the heart of the debate around preventative Botox.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2We know that collagen production starts to decline in our mid-20s.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2And collagen is what keeps our skin elastic and plump.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2So the logic behind preventative Botox is to intervene before that decline really kicks in.
Speaker 1I see. So it's like trying to get ahead of the game before those wrinkles even have a chance to form Right. But is that always the best approach? The article actually quotes two board certified plastic surgeons OK, dr David Schaefer and Stephen Hanna.
Speaker 2OK.
Speaker 1And they seem to have slightly different takes on this.
Speaker 2Oh, interesting yeah. So what do they have to say?
Speaker 1Well, Dr Schaefer believes it can be effective.
Speaker 2OK.
Speaker 1But he stresses that it depends on individual factors. So he's really big on informed consent. He even mentioned that he turns clients away if they don't fully understand the long-term commitment involved.
Speaker 2Wow, that's pretty telling.
Speaker 1Yeah, I thought so too.
Speaker 2So what about the other doctor?
Speaker 1So, dr Hanna, he takes a more cautious stance, especially when it comes to younger patients.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 1He only recommends preventative Botox in younger people for specific medical conditions. Oh really, yeah, like masseter muscle hypertrophy which affects the jaw muscles, preventative Botox in younger people for specific medical conditions.
Speaker 2Oh really.
Speaker 1Yeah, like masseter muscle hypertrophy which affects the jaw muscles, interesting. So it's not just about erasing wrinkles for him.
Speaker 2Got it.
Speaker 1There needs to be a clear medical rationale.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Especially when dealing with younger patients. Right, it really makes you think about the potential for overuse, yeah, or even misuse, of these treatments. And speaking of things to consider, let's talk about the elephant in the room.
Speaker 2What's that?
Speaker 1The cost.
Speaker 2Right, of course.
Speaker 1The Newsweek article cites data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 1And the average cost for neuromodulator injections, which includes Botox, is around $435. Yeah, that's not exactly pocket change. No, it's Botox is around $435. Yeah, that's not exactly pocket change.
Speaker 2No, it's not.
Speaker 1And you know, the kicker is that the results typically only last three to four months. Oh, wow, yeah so that's something to think about. Yeah, it is especially for younger people who might be considering this as a long-term strategy. It raises questions about financial sustainability.
Speaker 2Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 1And the potential burden of maintaining these treatments over time. It's something to carefully consider before jumping in.
Speaker 2Absolutely.
Speaker 1Definitely. Now, before we commit to anything, let's hear what a beauty industry veteran has to say about this whole trend.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 1The Newsweek article introduces us to Katie Moyer. She's a makeup artist with over two decades of experience wow and she doesn't hold back when it comes to her opinions on preventative botox oh, I like her already yeah, she's pretty outspoken too, her perspective is a fascinating counterpoint to the plastic surgeons we just discussed right offering a different set of concerns based on her experience in the beauty industry Makes sense, so she actually went viral for her appearance on the Him and Her podcast.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, I think I saw that.
Speaker 1Where she didn't mince words. She called preventative Botox misleading and unnecessary for most 20-somethings. Wow.
Speaker 2Yeah, she's not holding back.
Speaker 1She argues that it can create a financial burden Okay, and even a psychological dependence on injectables.
Speaker 2That's a good point.
Speaker 1It is. I think she makes a good point there.
Speaker 2Yeah, definitely something to think about.
Speaker 1It really highlights the need to be mindful of our motivations for seeking these treatments Right and to ensure we're not prioritizing quick fixes over a holistic approach to skin health. Yeah, for sure quick fixes over a holistic approach to skin health? Yeah, for sure, you know. She also raises the concern that relying on preventative Botox might lead people to neglect other important aspects of skin care.
Speaker 2Oh, like what?
Speaker 1Like protecting their skin from the sun or developing a healthy skin care routine.
Speaker 2That's an excellent point.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2It's like we're so focused on this one thing that we forget about the basics.
Speaker 1Exactly, and it's about creating a solid foundation of healthy skin habits rather than relying solely on cosmetic procedures.
Speaker 2I like that.
Speaker 1And that brings us to Moyer's alternative approach.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 1Which she calls the fundamentals of skin health.
Speaker 2So what are the fundamentals?
Speaker 1I'm curious to hear more about this.
Speaker 2You too.
Speaker 1It's always good to have a well-rounded perspective, considering both the pros and cons of different approaches.
Speaker 2Absolutely.
Speaker 1Okay, so you're probably wondering what Moyer recommends instead of you know going the preventative Botox route.
Speaker 2Yeah, I am Well.
Speaker 1the Newsweek article highlights her focus on what she calls the fundamentals, which basically boils down to taking good care of your skin.
Speaker 2That makes a lot of sense.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2It's like building a strong foundation before you even think about, you know, adding any fancy embellishments.
Speaker 1Exactly, and one of her top priorities is limiting sun exposure. She really emphasizes the importance of protecting your skin from the sun's damaging rays.
Speaker 2Yeah, we all know sunscreen is essential. But what else does she recommend?
Speaker 1She talks about being more mindful of your sun exposure habits in general, Things like seeking shade during peak hours, wearing protective clothing and even remembering that UV rays can penetrate clouds, so protection is important even on a cloudy day.
Speaker 2Yeah, it's easy to forget about those things when you're not directly under the blazing sun.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2But it's those consistent everyday habits that really add up over time when it comes to protecting your skin.
Speaker 1Right, and speaking of things we often overlook.
Speaker 2Yes.
Speaker 1Moyer is also a big advocate for getting enough sleep.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, something I think we could all probably benefit from. Definitely Sleep is so crucial for our overall health. Think we could all probably benefit from. Definitely Sleep is so crucial for our overall health, but it's often the first thing to go when we're busy or stressed, but you know, as the Newsweek article pointed out, sleep deprivation can really take a toll on our skin.
Speaker 1Absolutely. It can make our skin look dull and tired and more prone to wrinkles.
Speaker 2Yeah, no one wants that.
Speaker 1Moyer's point is that when we're sleep deprived, our skin doesn't have the chance to repair itself properly.
Speaker 2Oh, okay.
Speaker 1Which can accelerate the aging process.
Speaker 2Makes you want to prioritize those eight hours tonight, doesn't it?
Speaker 1It really does.
Speaker 2Okay, so enough sleep. What else?
Speaker 1Now another fundamental that Moyer highlights is the connection between diet and skin health.
Speaker 2Oh, that's a good one.
Speaker 1You know that saying you are what you eat.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Well, it seems like that applies to our skin as well.
Speaker 2There's no doubt that what we put into our bodies affects how we look and feel.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2And our skin is no exception.
Speaker 1Exactly. Moyer stresses the importance of a nutrient-rich diet Okay Packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, to nourish our skin from the inside out.
Speaker 2So what kinds of foods are we talking about here?
Speaker 1Think lots of colorful fruits and vegetables. Okay, healthy fats and lean protein.
Speaker 2It's a good reminder that skincare isn't just about what we apply topically.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2It's also about what we fuel our bodies with.
Speaker 1So true. Now, in addition to these lifestyle changes, Moyer also mentions a more hands-on approach.
Speaker 2Like what Microneedling? Oh yeah, I've been hearing more and more about that lately.
Speaker 1Have you ever tried it?
Speaker 2I haven't personally.
Speaker 1It sounds a bit intimidating at first. I can imagine Tiny needles creating controlled microinjuries in the skin.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1But the Newsweek article explains that this process actually stimulates collagen production oh wow and helps improve skin texture.
Speaker 2So it's not just about erasing wrinkles.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2It's about promoting overall skin rejuvenation and a more youthful appearance.
Speaker 1Exactly, and while microneedling is a medical procedure, it aligns with Moyer's philosophy of prioritizing a more holistic approach to skin care. I see it's about working with your skin's natural processes to enhance its health and vibrancy, rather than simply trying to mask imperfections.
Speaker 2That's a really interesting distinction. It's like choosing to nourish and support your skin rather than just trying to cover up any perceived flaws.
Speaker 1Right, and it makes you wonder is it possible to combine these different approaches? Can we blend the fundamentals with medical interventions like Botox to achieve the best possible results?
Speaker 2That's a great question.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And it speaks to the evolving landscape of beauty and aging Right. There's no one size fits all answer.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2And what works best for one person might not be the right approach for another.
Speaker 1It seems like the key is to find what feels right for you, both physically and philosophically.
Speaker 2Absolutely, and it's about having open and honest conversations with qualified professionals who can help you navigate the options and make informed decisions that align with your individual needs and goals.
Speaker 1Now we've talked a lot about the practical side of preventative Botox.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1But there's another layer to this conversation that we haven't fully addressed.
Speaker 2What's that?
Speaker 1The cultural context.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, you're right.
Speaker 1It's not just about wrinkles and treatments. It's about how we perceive aging and beauty.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1And the pressures we face in a society that often values youth above all else.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's a big one.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's like we're living in this strange paradox.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1On one hand, we're told to like embrace aging gracefully.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1But then we're bombarded with images of like ageless celebrities and influencers. It's hard not to feel the pressure to keep up.
Speaker 2Yeah, and social media plays a huge role in shaping those perceptions too, we're constantly scrolling through carefully curated feeds filled with filtered perfection.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2It's easy to lose sight of what's real and attainable.
Speaker 1It makes you wonder.
Speaker 2What's that?
Speaker 1Are we choosing preventative Botox because we genuinely want it Right, or are we like, subtly influenced by these external pressures?
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Are we trying to like freeze time or? Are we just trying to fit in.
Speaker 2That's a really good question. Yeah, it reminds me of something Dr Schaefer emphasized in the Newsweek article.
Speaker 1What's that?
Speaker 2The importance of understanding our motivations.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Are we seeking these treatments for ourselves?
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2Or are we trying to meet someone else's expectations?
Speaker 1It's like we're caught in this tug of war between self-acceptance and societal pressures. Yeah, it is, and it seems like younger generations, like Gen Z, are facing even more pressure to look a certain way.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1I mean, they're growing up in a world where appearance is constantly scrutinized and documented online. Exactly it's no wonder they're feeling the pressure to start these treatments earlier and earlier.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1It's a lot to navigate.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1And it brings us back to that thought-provoking question posed in the Newsweek article. Okay, how much do cultural pressures and beauty standards influence decisions around preventative Botox, especially for younger generations?
Speaker 2It's a question we can't ignore, right, and it's not just about preventative Botox. It's about all forms of cosmetic enhancements? Are we making these choices freely and autonomously?
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2Or are we bowing to external pressures?
Speaker 1It's a complex issue with no easy answers.
Speaker 2It really is.
Speaker 1But I think simply asking the question is a step in the right direction.
Speaker 2Yeah, I agree.
Speaker 1It encourages us to be more mindful and critical of the messages we're bombarded with.
Embracing Individuality and Aging Gracefully
Speaker 2Absolutely.
Speaker 1So, as we wrap up our deep dive into the world of preventative Botox, it seems like the biggest takeaway isn't about wrinkles or needles. It's about taking a step back and really examining our motivation Exactly. It's about understanding the societal pressures that influence us and having the courage to challenge them. I like that.
Speaker 1And it's about remembering that true beauty isn't about chasing after some unattainable ideal yeah but about embracing our individuality and aging gracefully on our own terms I couldn't have said it better myself so we hope this deep dive has given you some food for thought, yeah, and helped you explore this complex topic definitely remember there's no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to beauty and aging right. What matters most is making informed decisions that feel right for you. Absolutely and as always, stay curious.
Speaker 2Yes.
Speaker 1Keep questioning.
Speaker 2Uh huh.
Speaker 1And never stop learning.
Speaker 2Until next time.
