Welcome to the Beauty Standard with Dr Roy Kim. All right, so thinking about a facelift, but maybe a little nervous about the whole thing.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's understandable.
Speaker 1We hear ya. That's why we're doing this deep dive into rapid recovery facelifts. Today We've got some doctor's notes and a whole blog post about this newer approach. Exactly yeah, we want to give you all the info so you can feel good about making the best choice for yourself.
Speaker 2Right.
Speaker 1From what I've seen, this isn't, like you know, your grandma's facelift. Right Seems like things have come a long way, like as far as techniques and recovery time. For sure, the blog post even calls it a game changer. But is that all hype? What do you think?
Speaker 2I mean, there's definitely truth to that. To the game changer thing Okay, the goal is the same, you know, looking younger, but how we get there, that's changed a lot.
Speaker 1Okay, so less pain, faster healing.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1That's what we all want.
Speaker 2Exactly.
Speaker 1Both sources talk a lot about this deep plane technique. What's so special about that?
Speaker 2Well, you can imagine the SMS layer. That's like the scaffolding that holds your face up. Okay, and older facelifts they focus more on the surface, kind of like if you were just rearranging the wallpaper.
Speaker 1Oh, okay.
Speaker 2But the deep plane technique. It actually works on that deeper scaffolding.
Speaker 1So it's more like a structural renovation instead of just a cosmetic touch-up. Exactly, got it Okay, and because you're working at that deeper level.
Speaker 2Yeah, there's less trauma to the surface tissues.
Speaker 1Makes sense.
Speaker 2So that means less bruising, less swelling.
Speaker 1Oh nice.
Speaker 2Yeah, and it's been shown to give a more natural looking lift, a longer lasting lift too, like one study found that 95% of patients who had the deep plane technique were still happy with the results even five years later, Wow, that's impressive.
Speaker 1I was also surprised to learn that they inject long-term numbing medication during surgery, so you don't even feel that initial pain when you wake up. Right, that's smart.
Speaker 2Yeah, it makes a huge difference in those first few days. For sure, Comfort's a big part of rapid recovery. Now that doesn't mean that there's no prep work involved, Getting ready for this kind of facelift. That's key to having a really smooth experience.
Speaker 1Right, the doctor's notes have a whole section on prep. Some of it's standard, like no blood thinners beforehand, eating healthy all that. But I loved the detail about setting up a comfy recovery space.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, absolutely. That's so important. Preparation is half the battle, right.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Your recovery space should be like a sanctuary.
Speaker 1I like that.
Speaker 2You know someplace where you can relax and just focus on healing. Think about like comfy pillows, easy to grab snacks.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Maybe a stack of books or your favorite shows all queued up.
Speaker 1And no smoking. Yeah, the blog post was really really serious about that.
Speaker 2Right right.
Speaker 1I know smoking's bad, but why is it so crucial to quit before a facelift?
Speaker 2Well, smoking, it restricts blood flow and that's essential for healing. Okay, so it can really delay the whole process and even increase the risk of complications.
Speaker 1Oh, wow.
Speaker 2Yeah, so if you're even thinking about this procedure, you get a kick to have it.
Speaker 1Got it no smoking, okay. So we've prepped our bodies and our little recovery nest. Now talk me through what actually happens on surgery day.
Speaker 2So once you're under anesthesia, comfortable, the surgeon's going to make incisions. They're usually hidden along your hairline and your natural contours. Surgeon's going to make incisions, they're usually hidden along your hairline and your natural contours, okay, and then, using that deep plane technique, they carefully lift and reposition those deeper tissues.
Speaker 1So they're going in there and like literally re-sculpting the structure of your face.
Speaker 2Yeah, pretty much.
Speaker 1Wow, and this whole thing only takes three to five hours.
Speaker 2That's right.
Speaker 1That's shorter than a transatlantic flight.
Speaker 2It is Advancements in the techniques. It's made the procedure much more efficient. Okay, and shorter surgery usually means less trauma and faster recovery for you.
Speaker 1Okay, speaking of recovery, this is where the rapid part really shines. The sources say you could be back to your routine in one to two weeks.
Speaker 2Seriously, it's true, most patients are up and about pretty quickly. Wow, of course, the downtime is way less than it used to be.
Speaker 1So no, like weeks of hiding under the covers, Not at all Awesome.
Speaker 2You will need to take it easy for the first few days, of course, yeah, but you're encouraged to start moving around gently pretty soon, okay, walking, for example. That's great for circulation, prevents blood clots. It's all about listening to your body and following your surgeon's instructions.
Speaker 1Makes sense. The sources also mention lymphatic massage for recovery. Oh yeah, that sounds so fancy.
Speaker 2It is pretty fancy. What is it and how does it help with swelling?
Speaker 1So it's a really gentle technique, okay.
Speaker 2Helps to drain fluids and toxins. Imagine it like a mini massage for your face.
Speaker 1Oh nice.
Speaker 2Yeah, encouraging everything to flow properly, okay, it can really speed up the reduction of swelling.
Speaker 1Okay, sign me up.
Speaker 2So you look and feel better faster.
Speaker 1We've got gentle movement, fancy massage. Yeah, what about pain management? Is it really as minimal as they say?
Speaker 2You know a lot of patients do really well just with over-the-counter pain meds. But your surgeon will prescribe stronger medication if you need it.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2Don't be shy about letting them know how much pain you're in Makes sense.
Speaker 1Okay, it sounds like recovery is way more manageable than I thought. Ha ha ha. All right on to the fun part healing hacks. High protein hydration, I get that, but hyperbaric oxygen therapy yeah, that sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie.
Speaker 2Right, so it involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. Okay, basically it's flooding your body with oxygen.
Speaker 1Wow.
Speaker 2Which supercharges the healing.
Speaker 1So you're like a superhero, right Healing at whoop speed.
Speaker 2Exactly Now. It's not standard for everyone, Okay.
Speaker 1But some patients, they really swear by it. I love it. What about skin care after the procedure?
Speaker 2So your surgeon will give you the specifics, okay, but the key is just gentleness. Okay, think hydrating, soothing products.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2No harsh scrubs or treatments.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And, of course, sun protection is essential for at least six months. Okay, your skin will be extra sensitive after.
Speaker 1Six months of serious sun protection. That's dedication extra sensitive after Six months of serious sun protection. That's dedication. It is, but it makes sense. Yeah, your skin is so delicate, exactly.
Speaker 2Okay, it's a small price to pay for the best results. Now let's talk scars.
Speaker 1Okay, scars. This is what worries people.
Speaker 2It is.
Speaker 1How long do the sutures stay in and what can you do to minimize the scars?
Speaker 2So the sutures are typically removed after a week or two. Okay, your surgeon might recommend silicone gel sheets.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2Or other therapies to help the scars fade nicely.
Speaker 1So it's not just about the surgery, but also all the aftercare.
Speaker 2Absolutely Plays a huge role in the final outcome.
Speaker 1That makes a big difference.
Speaker 2It does.
Speaker 1Got it.
Speaker 2We'll dive into the details of aftercare and long-term maintenance in the next part of our deep dive, but first let's take a quick break.
Speaker 1Sounds good. Okay, we're back ready to keep going with our deep dive into these rapid recovery facelifts. We talked about the procedure itself, the prep, what to expect during recovery. But let's get real. Are there any risks Of?
Speaker 2course. Things people should know before jumping in yeah, I mean, like any surgery there are some inherent risks. You'll definitely have some swelling and bruising and some people they experience a bit of asymmetry in the first couple weeks asymmetry yeah, but that usually evens out as you heal so a little wonkiness is normal at first totally normal okay, good to know, but what about more serious complications?
Speaker 1yeah, how common are those well.
Speaker 2Serious complications are rare, especially when you choose, you know, a board-certified plastic surgeon mm-hmm who has a lot of experience with facelifts right but it's so important to talk to your surgeon openly and honestly yeah about all the potential risks and benefits right, because everyone's different right.
Speaker 1What works for one person might not work for another exactly the blog post mentioned things like infection and changes in skin sensation. Should people be worried about that?
Speaker 2well, infection is actually pretty uncommon as long as you take care of yourself properly.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2And changes in skin sensation, like if you have numbness or tingling.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2That can happen.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Because they're moving things around in there during the procedure.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2But it usually goes away on its own. The nerves just need time to heal.
Speaker 1Okay, so some temporary discomfort, yeah, but serious issues are rare. Right, that's good. You know we've talked a lot about like the physical stuff, but what about the emotional side of it?
Speaker 2Oh, that's huge.
Speaker 1This seems like a big decision to make and I imagine there's a lot to process emotionally after such a big change.
Speaker 2Absolutely. It's really important to have realistic expectations about the outcome.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2A facelift can boost your confidence, make you look younger, but it's not like a magic solution. Right, it's important to address any emotional concerns too.
Speaker 1So it's not just about changing how you look. It's also about feeling good on the inside.
Speaker 2Exactly, a facelift can be a great tool for self-improvement, but it's only one piece of the puzzle. It's about feeling like the best version of yourself inside and out.
Speaker 1That's a good point. The blog post also talked about like comparing rapid recovery facelifts to other options like traditional facelifts and non-surgical stuff.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Can you walk us through that a little bit?
Speaker 2Sure. So traditional facelifts they usually involve more extensive surgery.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2And longer recovery times, the rapid recovery techniques. They've really addressed a lot of those issues.
Speaker 1So it sounds like rapid recovery is kind of the go to now. For most people Are traditional facelifts like obsolete.
Speaker 2I wouldn't say obsolete. Yeah, the benefits of rapid recovery are, I mean, yeah, for sure. They're hard to ignore. Less downtime, less trauma.
Facelift Options
Speaker 1What about the non-surgical stuff you hear about all the time?
Speaker 2Fillers thread lifts all therapy, all that? Yeah, those are great for addressing, like, milder signs of aging, okay, but they don't really provide the same level of lift and repositioning, got it as a surgical facelift. It's kind of like a think of fillers. They're like adding air to a tire they plump things up.
Speaker 1Okay, yeah.
Speaker 2Thread lifts are like pulling the skin taut with these little temporary strings, and then Ultherapy is sort of like encouraging your skin to tighten itself up over time.
Speaker 1So they're all working towards the same goal, yeah, just with different levels of like intensity and how long it lasts.
Speaker 2Exactly. It really comes down to your own individual needs and goals. Some people they're happy with just a little, while others want a more dramatic change.
Speaker 1Makes sense. The blog post really hammered home finding the right surgeon.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Seems super important with something like this. What are some key things to look for?
Speaker 2Well, board certification in plastic surgery, that's a must.
Speaker 1Okay.
Speaker 2You want someone who specializes in facelifts, obviously, and has a ton of experience. Okay, don't be afraid to ask for before and after photos from their previous patients to get a feel for their style and the results they get.
Speaker 1That's smart, like checking out an artist's portfolio before you commission a painting.
Speaker 2Exactly. You want to make sure you're on the same page aesthetically?
Speaker 1Yeah for sure. Patient reviews and testimonials those can be helpful too, right?
Speaker 2Absolutely.
Speaker 1Hearing other people's experiences can give you some insight.
Speaker 2Yeah, into the surgeon's communication style and overall approach. Yeah.
Speaker 1And, of course, feeling comfortable and confident with your surgeon. That's super important.
Speaker 2Huge. You should feel heard and confident that your surgeon gets what you want.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2And that they can help you achieve your goals.
Speaker 1All right. So you've done your research, found a great surgeon, had your rapid recovery facelift. You're loving the results. How do you keep looking your best? How do you maintain those results?
Speaker 2Well, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is really key. Ok, protect your skin from the sun every day.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2Wear sunscreen. Good skin care routine, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet all that good stuff.
Speaker 1It sounds like it's not just about the procedure itself, but also those healthy choices that keep you looking good overall.
Speaker 2Right, and remember a facelift. It can turn back the clock, but it can't actually stop aging.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2You'll continue to age naturally but, you'll be doing it from a more youthful place.
Speaker 1Makes sense. The blog post mentioned non-invasive treatments for maintaining the results. Can you tell us more about those?
Speaker 2Yeah, as you continue to age, you might consider touch-up treatments like fillers, old therapy, things like that, to address any new concerns that pop up. Those can help maintain and enhance your facelift results.
Speaker 1So it's like a two-pronged approach. The initial facelift sets the stage and then you use those non-invasive treatments to keep things fresh as you go.
Speaker 2That's a great way to think about it now I know we've given everyone a lot to think about yeah, we have anything else you want to add before we wrap up yeah, just if you're considering a facelift, don't let fear or these old ideas about facelifts hold you back. Rapid recovery it's really changed everything.
Speaker 1For sure.
Speaker 2This procedure is so much more accessible, yeah, and way less daunting.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2With amazing results.
Speaker 1It is amazing to see how far we've come and who knows what's next.
Speaker 2I know right. The field is constantly evolving. There's always new techniques and technologies coming out.
Speaker 1Well, we'll definitely be here to keep you updated on all of that.
Speaker 2We will.
Speaker 1But for now, hopefully, this deep dive has given you all the info you need to make the best choice for yourself.
Speaker 2Yeah, knowledge is power, right, it is. Feeling informed is the first step towards being empowered.
Speaker 1Well said and, on that note, we'll be back in a minute to finish up our deep dive. Stay with us. All right, we're back for the last part of our deep dive on rapid recovery facelifts. You know, going through all this, it really hits me how personal this decision is.
Speaker 2Oh, absolutely yeah, it really is. There's no like one size fits all approach to facial rejuvenation.
Speaker 1Right, Every person's different their anatomy what they're worried about, what they want to get out of it, and that's why finding the right surgeon is so important, someone who really gets.
Speaker 2you Couldn't agree more. It goes beyond just like technical skill. You want a surgeon who understands, like your vision for what you want to look like.
Speaker 1Right, because ultimately, it's not just about getting rid of wrinkles or tightening skin. It's about you know, feeling more confident, comfortable in your own skin.
Speaker 2That's a great way to put it Feeling like the best version of yourself, inside and out.
Speaker 1So, as we wrap up, what's like the one key message you want our listener to take away from all this?
Speaker 2I'd say, if you're thinking about a facelift, don't let fear or those old ideas about facelifts hold you back. Yeah, rapid recovery has really changed things. It's more accessible, less scary than it used to be, and the results are amazing.
Speaker 1It really is incredible how far we've come and who knows what's next.
Speaker 2Exactly. This field is always changing. New techniques and technologies are coming out all the time.
Speaker 1Well, we'll be here to keep you in the loop on all that.
Speaker 2We will.
Speaker 1But for now, hopefully, this deep dive has given you the knowledge to make the best decision for you.
Speaker 2Absolutely Remember knowledge is power. It is. Feeling informed.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2That's the first step to feeling empowered.
